Viewpoint: Rolls of Coins Still Net Valuable Finds

It's exciting to hear what other people find in rolls of coins so I
thought I'd share some of my data.
In the past three years I've searched more than 260,000 cents. The
oldest coin I found was an 1865 Indian Head cent; the rarest was a
mint state 1999 wide "AM." I found three other 1999 wide AMs, lots
of 1998 and 2000 wide AMs, wheaties, blank planchets, RPMs,
doubled-dies, foreign, etc.
After reading Numismatic News two weeks ago, I checked the 1982
small-date zinc cents for doubled-die reverses but found none. I
saved the Lincoln Memorial copper cents, put them in rolls and
compiled the totals. The results are neither scientific nor
significant but the process was fun. The percentage of copper cents
to the total found in rolls has decreased in the past three years.
Most of these rolls were obtained in my hometown of Charlotte,
N.C., but I did get rolls in places as far away as Atlanta and
Washington, D.C.
